Heat Treatments: Hot Baths, Hot Compresses
Heat is relaxing and soothing. It can help your joints move better with less pain by relaxing painfully tight muscles. Various forms of heat are frequently advised. These include hot baths, hot packs, heat lamps, and paraffin wax applications. A hot bath first thing in the morning may provide a better start to your day. Occasionally however, some people respond better to cold packs around an acutely inflamed joint than to heat.
Heat can be applied in many different ways. Many people find that hot baths reduce stiffness, and warm pools are helpful when their range of motion is limited; the buoyancy of the water enables them to perform movements they cannot do out of water. Many individuals find that water exercise programs are especially beneficial. Hot compresses can be prepared by soaking towels in hot water, wringing them out, and applying to the painful area.
Electric heating pads may be placed on the painful area for short periods of time. However, car must be taken to be sure the appliance is in good condition and is used appropriately.
