Ask Doctor about Surgical Procedures
When considering surgery you will want to review many important questions. Generally, they should be discussed with your physician. Here are some questions to ask your doctor:
- What other kinds of treatment is available other than surgery?
- Can you explain the surgical procedure?
- How long will the surgery take?
- What, if any, risks are involved? Will I need a blood transfusion?
- What type of anesthesia will I have?
- How much improvement can I expect from this procedure?
- Will other surgery be necessary?
- If surgery is chosen, how will my family doctor be involved in my hospitalization?
- How often have you performed this type of surgery?
- May I speak with a patient who has undergone this surgery?
- How long should I expect to stay in the hospital?
- Will I receive medication for pain?
- How long will I have to stay in bed after surgery?
- How long before physical therapy is started?
- What restrictions will be placed on my activities, such as driving, climbing stairs, bending, and eating, and making love?
- Will I need special equipment at home?
Surgical techniques have helped many people with arthritis. These techniques may help you. However, because each person’s arthritis is an individual matter, your doctor and health care team can best evaluate whether or not surgical techniques will be appropriate for your case. If you do have surgery, however, your active participation during the recovery period in doing exercises and physical therapy will be an important key to the success of the procedures.
What to Expect After Surgery
Before you agree to have surgery to relieve your pain or correct your deformity caused by arthritis, be sure to plan ahead so that your recovery period can be as effective as possible. For example, you may want to make arrangements to have some help at home or to stay where someone can help you during the first weeks after surgery. You may need a period of rest and some time to get used to certain aids, such as splints, crutches, or a cane while you are recovering. You will have an exercise routine to do at home as well as physical therapy at your health centre. It will take at least a few weeks or longer after some procedures, for you to resume your usual routine.
