Cold and Heat Home Treatments
For some arthritic pains, cold treatment helps provide relief. An easy way to make a cold compress is by filling a plastic bag with ice cubes. Place a towel over the skin, and the ice bag above the towel. Also, a towel can be soaked in ice water, wrong out, and placed on the painful area. A dry towel or piece of plastic wrap should be placed between the cold compress and the skin to protect the skin from effects of the cold compress.
Some individuals find that alternating between heat and cold provides some relief. This is easier to do for hands and feet than other areas of the body, as hands and feet can be soaked alternately in hot or cold water. Usually, cold treatments are recommended for the first 24 to 48 hours after an acute injury.
