US Arthritis Foundation and Other GroupsThe US Arthritis FoundationThe US Arthritis Foundation was formed about 40 years ago and is a voluntarily supported organization working to solve the serious problems associated with all forms of arthritis. Within the Arthritis Foundation are two professional associations: the American Rheumatism Association Section, the world’s largest professional society of rheumatologists; and the Arthritis Health Professional Section, whose members are physical and occupational therapists, medical personnel and social workers, and others concerned with arthritis patient care. The Foundation’s major purposes are to support research to prevent and cure all forms of arthritis and to provide professional and public education. Through grants, the Foundation enables many health professionals to work in leading research institutions. Throughout the United States the Arthritis Foundation supports community health services for arthritis sufferers. Additionally, the American Juvenile Arthritis Organization is for people interested in childhood arthritis. Indian Rheumatism Association (IRA)The Indian Rheumatism Association has been quite active ever since 1990 when it was founded. The arthritis health professionals and rheumatologists such as Dr. P.D. Gulati, Prof. (Mrs.) S. Sachdev and Prof. G.G. Mansharamani are of great help to those who need professional guidance. Other Self-Help GroupsMany groups, organizations, and telephone networks have developed in many countries because persons with similar afflictions or concerns joined together to provide mutual assistance. Individuals with diseases such as arthritis have found that they can not always depend on personal resources alone but can remain independent and enjoy a sense of well-being when their resources are supplemented with the help of others. In these groups a professional may be paid from time to time to give a lecture or an informal presentation. There may be minimal costs for participation. To learn if there are any self-help groups of interest to you locally, ask your physician, contact your local arthritis clinics or hospital. These agencies would willingly provide free referral services for individuals seeking self-help groups addressing their concerns or requesting information on the development of new groups. You may be interested in groups relating to issues in addition to arthritis. For example, if you are concerned about losing weight, quitting smoking, overcoming depressive illness, or learning more about the psychological aspects of coping with chronic pain, these self-help referral centers can direct you. |
