Variety in Your Diet to Control Arthritis

One other important rule for good nutrition is to eat a wide variety of foods. More than 40 different vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients are essential to health and are available to your body only from the food you eat. No single food has all the nutrients you need. Egg, for example, is almost a perfect package of nutrition, but has no vitamin C. Milk, which is designed as, sole nourishment for infants or animals, contains no iron.

By eating as many different foods as possible, you are likely to get all the nutrients you need. You will also get foods with a variety of tastes and textures, and that will make your meals more interesting.

There is another reason for eating a variety of foods. Some people who have chronic diseases like arthritis believe that after they eat a particular food, their condition changes for the worse. If that happens, it’s only sensible to stop eating the food that is believed to cause the problem. If you are eating a varied diet, the nutrients you lose from one food will easily by replaced by the same nutrients from other foods.

You’re also likely to get better nutritional value when you use more fresh fruits and vegetables and meats and foods that have had only a minimum of processing. Frankfurters and cold cuts, for instance, have less protein and more fat than the same amount of lean meat. Whole grain bread has all the original nutrients from the grain. Enriched bread has a number of nutrients removed when the flour is milled; enrichment replaces some of them, but not all.
